It’s difficult to find an adult whose life has not been touched in some way by Alzheimer’s disease, whether they have lost a family member to the disease, are currently caring for a loved one who suffers from Alzheimer’s, or sadly, have Alzheimer’s disease themselves.
For a variety of reasons, women are especially hard-hit by the condition, whether as patients or as caregivers. According to the Alzheimer’s Association:
- Almost two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer’s are women
- Women in their 60s are more than twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s over the remainder of their lives as they are to develop breast cancer
- More than 60% of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers are women
- Women take on more caregiving tasks than their male counterparts, and care for people with more cognitive, functional, and behavioral problems
- Nearly 19% of women who are Alzheimer’s caregivers had to quit work in order to become or remain a caregiver.
In recognition of the fact that women are disproportionately affected by Alzheimer’s, Women Conquer ALZ was created. Women Conquer ALZ is an initiative dedicated to shining a spotlight on how the condition affects women, whether patient, caregiver, or loved one. Barron, Rosenberg, Mayoras & Mayoras was honored to be a sponsor of the May 2025 Women Conquer ALZ event in Royal Oak, Michigan.
An Event to Remember
BRMM attorneys Danielle Mayoras and Roshan Katto attended the Women Conquer ALZ event to show the firm’s personal support for the cause, as well as our financial support. Being in the presence of so many women with so much strength and commitment was inspiring, to say the least. Danielle shared, “It was a night filled with an amazing group of women, including attendees who had loved ones with Alzheimer’s as well as women who came to support the cause of raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. I was really touched by the dedicated advocates and professionals I spoke with, and it was very rewarding after serving on the event committee to see it come to life.”
Danielle and Roshan had a table at the event and shared resources to help attendees with elder law and estate planning issues. They also spoke with countless women about the firm’s support for those dealing with Alzheimer’s and the services available to assist families.
As caregivers well know, facing down Alzheimer’s can be an isolating experience. Caregiving requires so much time and energy, there is often little left over for maintaining social relationships that can provide much-needed support. Being in the presence of so many others who truly understand the challenges and are committed to the search for a cure is empowering. It sends a clear message to patients and families: you are not alone.
